Cape Mentelle Vineyards, named for a nearby natural landmark in keeping with emphasis on geography, lies in the far southwest corner of Australia where the Margaret River meets the Indian Ocean.
The maritime location, climate and gravel soils are evocative of Bordeaux, which prompted the winery to stake a claim in the traditional varieties of the French region: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Further study of the unique attributes of the Margaret River region led the winery to supplement the plantings with Shiraz and Chardonnay.
