Gedeon Birtok
Izsák
"My great-grandparents and grandparents were all winemakers here, in the Izsák region. I grew up in the Gedeon vineyard. It wasn’t even a question for me that I would have to show what I can do here in future. I founded the estate in 2002 with my wife, who also works in the trade, and from 2006 we started bottling as well. My wife sometimes mentions that had we worked in a different region at least we could have started from zero, and not from -5! The negative attitude that pervades towards the Kunság wine region is tangible, but that’s exactly why we see the possibility to build a positive reputation. The new and quality-oriented direction of the Kunság and the varieties connected to it is an exciting combination. There are quite a few of us who think this way, and I hope we can be among the first ones who can stand out and change the current situation. The winery is characterised by the predominance of ‘Hungaricums’. Besides the more familiar varieties (Ezerjó, Kadarka), the lesser known golden Sárfehér and the fresh, citrus-like Kövidinka play an outstanding role. These were the wines of our grandfathers’ and fathers’, and I have a great faith in them. What we are the best at is a carbonated sparkling wine (Gyöngyöző bor in Hungarian). We already have two Perles. It’s a hard job to smuggle gentle, long lasting, airy bubbles into the wine, but in this we really do have experience. Following the winemaking we gently spread the added carbon-dioxide into it. This step is crucial. We work with a big surface area, constantly mixing it slowly. With this finesse the tiny bubbles stay in the wine for a long time. A day after opening the bottle, even in one decilitre, they stay, which is very rare!" Árpád Varga - May, 2010
