We would like to make pure concentrated fruity wines - Conversation with Gyula Kúcs, manager of Sauska Cellar.
BT: Is the small number lot of Kadarka, Pinot Noir and Kékfrankos the consequence of an experiment or rather of circumstance? Or maybe both?
KGY: Both as a matter of fact. It is true we have small areas for these three types, for example 2200 vine-stocks of kadarka in Ördögárok, but the goal in all three cases is making of the purest, most concentrated, fruity wines we can, which reflect the characteristics of the grapes.
BT: The "Green labelled" and the Makár Chardonnay are in their second vintage. In your opinion, did Siklós verify the news of its white wine potential?
KGY: It did perfectly. Our fields in Siklós give white wine with characteristic taste and flavour, mainly because of the soil. The Makár-field where we make field-selected chardonnay is special in its location as well, it is on the top of a dune where the temperature is lower, and the protection of the plants is much easier thanks to the ever-flowing wind, thus the flavour and acids are more preserved.
BT: How is this year's grape harvest proceeding? How is the 2008 vintage looking?
KGY: We are just in the middle of the harvest, the cabernet and the syrah is still on the vine-stocks. We considered this vintage very beautiful, the incredible amount of painstaking work is paying off; we were capable of waiting for the warm and sunny weather of October, so we could harvest the grape in a healthy and fully ripe state.
BT: Do you have any new features or improvement nowadays?
KGY: On the Makár-field in Siklós we are preparing a new plantation on a crater-like area similar to Ördögárok. In December two new members of the Cuvée series will make a debut, the Cuvée 7 Villány and Siklós, with which we can prove that beautiful red wines can be made in Siklós, although with different characteristics.
