BIERZO
In the beginning of his career Alvaro Palacios traded with French barrique casks all over in Spain and he got acquainted in detail with the most hidden wine-districts of Spain in the course of his business trips. In this way he got to Bierzo located in the south-west part of Spain, on the border of Castilla y Léon and Galicia, which reminded him of Priorat clearly with its elevated (480-800 m) sharp descents, barren, slaty soil, old (60-100-year-old) , head cultivated mencia vine-stocks and Mediterranean-like climate. Moreover this country is the last station of Saint Jacob pilgrimage leads to Santiago de Compostela; this is why the tradition of wine-growing was established by monks. So in 1998 when with his nephew, Ricardo Pérez, who also learnt in Bordeux, wanted to start a new venture, they naturally chose Bierzo and there the environs of Corullón where they grow grape-vine on 27 hectares according to the principles of biodynamic.
The determinant grape of this area is mencia (in Portugal it is called jaen) which can give well-structured wines with absolutely special, unmistakable, raspberry-cherry and almost white wine like aromas. The cellar, Desendientes de José Palacios got its name after Alvaro's father, Ricardo's grandfather, the founder of Palacios Remondo family cellar.
