PRIORAT
In 1989 starting a wine venture was not at all as obvious as it is these days. Moreover, besides Alvaro Palacios and some other fanatics of the same kidney not so many people valued highly this heavily cultivable, red and mica shale (llicorella in Spanish) soil wine-district which is located on the extremely sharp descents of the Montsant mountains, to the south of Barcelona. However Palacios believed his own eyes, intuition and the Carthusian monks, who have been dealing with wine-growing since 1194, when he bought in Gratallops village the territory called Finca Dofí which is now a denominator of one of his excellent wines. The real breakthrough happened in 1995 when the vintage of Ermites plantation, which was bought in 1993, got into the L'Ermita bottles, which has become a notion since then through the world and Spain. It was so amazing everywhere from California through Bordeux to Australia so the Wine Spectator scored it with 97 points.
