Etienne's family had always lived from selling grapes, and most of the crop from the family plots is still pressed by a large, well-known house, but since 2010 they have been making their own champagne from four hectares. In addition to a few rare varieties, almost exclusively Chardonnay is grown on the family parcels – the most prized of all is a 0.15-hectare plot, Clos des Maladries, which was planted by Etienne's grandfather. A ‘clos’ is a walled plot, typical mainly in Champagne, from which there are a total of just under 30 recorded in the entire wine region. One of these is Clos des Maladries in Avize, a 0.15-hectare Chardonnay plot with 40-year-old vines. The narrow rows are ploughed by horses, the cultivation has been organic from the beginning, and the grandparents keep an eye on this vineyard to this day, as it is also the back garden of their house.
100% Chardonnay from 2018, from a tiny plot in Avize, the capital of the variety. Thirty-five percent of the fermentation took place in barrels with the rest in tanks, followed by seven months of ageing before bottling. It was disgorged in May 2022 with zero dosage. It’s a special, elaborate rarity.
