The house was founded in 1843 in Reims by Joseph Krug, a visionary nonconformist who never compromised when it came to making champagne. Once he understood that the true essence of champagne is the pleasure it brings, his dream was to create the best possible champagne every year. By focusing on the character of the vineyards, respecting the individuality of the various plots and wines, he was able to fulfil his dream. Six generations of the Krug family have passed on this dream, enriching the founder’s vision and experience. This philosophy, along with their commitment to perfection, is what makes Krug one of the most renowned champagne houses in the region.
The year 2000 was one of extremes – hot and rainy, with storms. The harvest was plentiful, and the grapes were incredibly rich. The house aimed to create a magnificent vintage champagne for the last year of the millennium, capturing the essence of the period and the chaotic weather. The champagne represents all three of the region's famous grape varieties. Pinot Noir (42%) provides power and structure, Chardonnay (43%) offers soft freshness and Pinot Meunier (15%) contributes elegance. Krug 2000 is one of the most intense, dramatic and romantic vintage champagnes ever made. It has a beautiful deep gold colour, clearly indicating that a complex, mature champagne has been poured into the glass. Caramel, nougat, hazelnut and freshly baked pastry on the nose, followed by citrus gratin, lime peel and a long finish, with a depth that fills the whole mouth. Rich, precise, complex and generous.
The vintage is no longer available, and we are fortunate to have been able to acquire a few bottles.
