Endre Szászi grew up in Szigliget. As a boy, he’d go over to Szent György-hegy with his classmates from Hegymagas, though not for wine, but to forage sweet chestnuts in secret spots that only the locals knew. However, the hill held no other ties for him. When fate led him to winemaking, he began here nonetheless, with just 0.4 hectares. The family estate at Hegymagas, which was built from basalt and reclaimed tiles in 1998, is where they have lived ever since and where they rise with the vines and retire at night with wine. Each vintage carries that signature style unmistakably tied to the Szászi estate. A harmony of serene flavours and the hill’s minerality, something which holds true even for the estate’s sparkling wine, the 2022 of which marks its second vintage. Made from organically grown Furmint from the volcanic soils of Szent György-hegy, this wine was made using the traditional method, with secondary fermentation in bottle and zero dosage.
