The Niepoort ports, which are sealed in special bottles, enjoy a legendary reputation among collectors, and the top of the range is marked by their vintage ports from special vintages. These bottles exude tradition and respect. They have balance, concentration, strength and delicacy at the same time. Typically, they are bottled in the second year after they are harvested, and then matured for a long time before being released on the market. According to the key figures of the estate, the exciting metamorphosis occurs 20 years after the harvest: a transition from fruit to deep, mature flavours.

An exciting harvest, with hot and rainy weather. Small, deep-coloured and tannic berries arrived at the cellar from old (between 60-100 years) vines growing on slate soil. The overripe and shrivelled bunches were already separated on the sorting table, so only the best went into the fermentation vats. The nose of coffee and black berry fruit still appears, and these two notes determined the state before bottling. After two years of ageing in barrels, it was bottled in 2007.

Nineteen years after the harvest, the overall picture is mature, elegant and mineral. The balsamic vinegar notes are not there yet, however, the floral and fruity characters are already appearing. The infinitely long palate ends with sour tannins and spices. It’s robust.

It does not decline over time, if anything, it only changes.
