Montium – Legyesbénye

Story-like characters from the Kozér vineyard

We always say that we’re searching for story-like characters. Well, Ferenc Rieger and Péter Csorba are such characters. On the way to Tokaj, we often admired the first regular volcanic cones on the edge of Szerencs. One of these little cones bears the not too super sexy name of Legyesbénye, which lies at the foot of the also bizarrely named Fúlóhegy. If one has to climb up here among Ferenc and Péter’s organically cultivated rows of grapes, it immediately becomes a hill. It’s steep and stony with such diverse soil that is even rare in the best plots of the wine region.

“There was more botrytis and with it we made more sweet wine. We still conjure up the dry wines free of botrytis. We switched to organic cultivation in the vineyard from 2018, we changed small things in terms of technology, we purchased our first barrels and use less sulphur.”
