Homonna – Mumus

a table wine in the best sense of the word

Homonna – Mumus

Attila Homonna and his friend Pityke, who had returned from New York, sought after us with something completely unique. They are building a wine estate together, next to Lake Balaton, their main variety is Kékfrankos and the winery is half-built. They recently constructed the trellising for the vines planted a few years ago, their wine is called Mumus, and the whole thing from the label to the palate oozes a very good feel. They were built from scratch, says Pityke. We are showing their first two wines.
“I’m an urban figure, I’d lived in New York for 20 years, and then I wanted to do something radically different. I was looking for a site on the Balaton Uplands when Attila Homonna came up with the idea that we should do a mini-winery. It’s not my profession, I’m simply a fan but eventually we had a go at the friendly enterprise. New York is a 24/7 kind of place, where one can lose focus very easily. And this is completely different now and the road ahead of us is really exciting,” says ‘Pityke’ József Vályi-Tóth.

Anyone who knows me recognises that the Mumus (i.e. the Bogeyman) is partly me and this wine is both mocking the fine wines that are taken too seriously and also the natural wines which are taken too easy-going.

„The cap’s message is that you should drink it at once. The bottle is called ‘Füreder’, we buy it from an Austrian producer – and the Füred mineral water used to be in this kind of bottle and also the Kiskőrös apple wine. That’s our childhood. The idea of the back label was given by the label that used to be stuck on the old school benches. I managed to find a small printer in Szerencs, who still had that paper. We selected the grapes within Füred-Csopak, only from the Kékrankos variety. The technology for making the wine was provided by Homola. The wine was spontaneously fermented and was bottled unfiltered, with a minimal amount of sulphur,” – Attila Homonna.

MUMUS Kékfrankos Rosé 2021

A table wine in the best sense of the word. It’s the first rosé jointly made by Attila Homonna and his friend, Pityke, and is purely from Kékfrankos with brief maceration and spontaneous fermentation. It was bottled unfiltered with a minimal amount of sulphur. The palate is full and round with lively acidity and slight cloudiness.

MUMUS Kékfrankos 2020

A table wine in the best sense of the word. It’s the first red wine jointly made by Attila Homonna and his friend, Pityke, and is purely from Kékfrankos. The whole berries were spontaneously fermented in open vats, and the wine was bottled unfiltered with a minimal amount of sulphur. It turned out exactly the way we imagined, even from the first tasting: the cool, medium-bodied palate is slightly rustic. It’s thirst-quenching and a Kékfrankos through and through.
