In terms of popularity, it is Italy’s worthy answer to Champagne. Made since the mid-19th century, it is nevertheless all about something quite different from its refined French relative. Italy’s famous sparkling wine has lent its name to a town, a wine region and, for a long time, even a grape variety. Today, that grape is known as Glera, while Prosecco from northern Italy has become synonymous with the Italian joy of life, captured in a glass of bubbles.
