Bodegas Pintia

The Alvarez family (the owners of Vega Sicilia and Alion) started looking for a new winery and a new challenge in the mid-90s. They discovered the Toro region, located about 100 km away from Ribera del Duero, which despite having been accredited with DO status in 1987, wasn’t at all fashionable at the time. After purchasing an old vineyard in 1996, which was planted with ungrafted 25- to 50- year-old Tinto del Toro (Tempranillo) vines, they also began planting more vineyards. In this way, Pintia could ramp up production over time, with the land under vine reaching 106 hectares to produce between 250-300,000 bottles by today. The first vintage from 2001 made it onto the shelves in 2004.
