Chateau Angelus

Promoted in 2012 to the highest St. Emilion premier grand cru classé A rank, an elite group now comprising four chateaus, Angelus (or l'Angelus as it was earlier known), is regarded among the very best estates of the Right Bank. One of the longer standing family wineries in the St. Emilion appellation and as the bell on its label and cork might suggest, the winery was named after the three Angelus bells that could be heard in the vineyards coming from the chapel at Mazerat, the churches in Saint-Martin de Mazeret and Saint-Émilion. The estate was established by the Boüard family in 1782 and is currently managed by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rioval, who took over from her father Hubert de Boüard in 2012. It was Hubert who reversed the declining fortunes of the winery at the end of the 1980s. The Bordeaux university graduate, who was a student of the legendary Professor Émile Peynaud, started experimenting with open vat fermentation, and small barrel malolactic fermentation. He also lowered yields, increased selection and began ageing wines in new oak barrels. The 34 hectare family winery has 50% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Angelus also has a second wine, Le Carillon de l'Angelus, and introduced a third called Number 3 d'Angelus in 2007.
