Opus One

The Opus One winery in Oakville, California was founded as a unique partnership in 1978 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, legendary pioneers of Bordeaux and California respectively. It operated under the moniker of NapaMedoc before being renamed in 1982. The first and the second vintages (1979, 1980) were released simultaneously in 1984, and for a while it was the most expensive Californian wine. In the 1980s, after her father's death, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild left a successful stage career, bringing her own exquisite style and creativity to the design, construction, and operation of Opus One. The spectacular and groundbreaking winery designed by Scott Johnson was built in 1989 and in the 1990s Opus One became the cult wine it is today.
