We drove for hours across the untouched landscape at the foot of the Andes. With the Kaiken team, we visited old-vine Malbec vineyards – between the rows there are streambeds, scattered rocks, thyme, verbena and wonderful aromas. From the first words spoken over the poured wines, the difference was clear: while Montes focuses on perfecting varieties and blends, at Kaiken, the emphasis is on expressing the terroir in the wines, with almost everything built around Malbec. The core of the range, the essential Ultra Malbec, is also created here, from an altitude of 1,250 metres, where the days are scorching, the nights are cool, and the windy, rocky Uco Valley tests every vine. The hand-harvested fruit was fermented in concrete vats, then aged for one year in used and first-fill barrels. Aromas of blackberry and violet, while the palate is rich in spiciness, with rounded tannins and a warm, silky texture.

Chilean success in Argentina. The pioneer of Chilean quality winemaking, Viña Montes, started its Kaiken winery in neighbouring Argentina based on Malbec. Today, they work on three estates within the Mendoza wine region, their vineyards lie in the best regions, their wines focus on terroir.
