Bin 28 is one of the iconic representatives of Australian Shiraz, known for its rich, ripe and spicy character. It was first made in 1959, using grapes exclusively from the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, which Penfolds purchased in 1945. Today, it is made from a blend of several wine regions – McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. Thanks to the excellent weather conditions in the 2021 vintage, the grapes were of outstanding quality and yielded an abundant harvest. It was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels, 7% of which were new, allowing it to retain its deep and full character, while its structure remained fruity, smooth and balanced.

Deep black colour with a garnet rim, intense and multi-layered on the nose. Alongside black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), umami notes also emerge, such as roasted meat, dark soy sauce and dried herbs. The aromatic profile is completed by the floral character of violets. On the palate, black chocolate, rum, raisins and espresso are joined by notes of sour cherry and liquorice. The acidity is vibrant, the tannins are taut, while the oak is perfectly integrated. Fruitiness leads the way in this wine. The finish is long, mineral and elegant, lingering well after taking a sip. Ageing potential: 25 years.
