Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is one of the most iconic expressions of Australian Shiraz, known for its rich, ripe and spicy character. First made in 1959, it originally came exclusively from the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley, which Penfolds acquired in 1945.

Today, it is made from a blend of several regions – McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. It was aged for 12 months in American oak barrels, 7% of which were new, preserving its deep and full-bodied character, while maintaining a fruity, smooth and well-balanced structure. Its colour is deep black with a garnet rim.

The nose is intense and multi-layered. Alongside black fruits (blackberry and blackcurrant), umami notes also emerge, such as roasted meat, dark soy sauce and dried herbs. The aromatic profile is completed by the floral touch of violet. On the palate, notes of dark chocolate, rum, raisin and espresso appear alongside sour cherry and liquorice. The acidity is lively, the tannins are taut, while the oak is seamlessly integrated. The fruit remains dominant. The finish is long, lingering, mineral and elegant. Ageing potential: 25 years.
