This series of Penfold's was named after Max Schubert, its first chief winemaker, a legend in the history of the winery. The grapes are harvested from the cool area of the Adelaide Hills, where the main varieties are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The wine was matured in various barrels, including one-year-old barriques and used barrels. Thanks to the battonage, the outcome is creamy and dense. Subtle smokiness, oaky notes and a biscuity, caramel, sweet spicy character on the nose, while the palate is characterized by tropical fruit, mostly pineapple, plus a mineral character.
