Besides the Pinot Noir, the most important wine of our 2023 Weninger selection is this Blaufränkisch (or Kékfrankos) from the Austrian side of the border. We might as well call it an estate wine, made from the most important variety of the winery, from plots around Horitschon, from 5- to 35-year-old vines that grow on thick clay and limestone soil, from 30 different parcels. The lean and mineral style that we’re used to from the Balf side is replaced by deeply fruity flavours and the most typical notes of Blaufränkisch: sour cherry, sour cherry pit and black olives, besides earthy, tobacco notes. Lively acidity on the cool, spicy and refreshing palate. Biodynamic cultivation, 100% manual harvest, spontaneous fermentation in open vats for 10 days, then ageing for a year and a half in large, used barrels.
Bottled in December 2022, without filtering and fining.
