One of the foundations of our Kékfrankos (or Blaufränkisch) selection is made by Franz Weninger in Burgenland. We could call it an estate wine as the family's attention has been directed towards the variety for generations, they know everything about it and cultivate it in almost all of their vineyards. In 2021, this wine was selected from 30 parcels around Horitschon and Ritzing, from a total of 3 hectares. The age of the vines is mixed, from 5 years old to 35 years old, and the soil alternates between thick clay and thin limestone. On these rows, as well as across the entire estate, cultivation is biodynamic, and as natural as possible. After the hand harvest in September, the grapes were fermented spontaneously in open vats, and then the wine continued ageing in the cellar's classic, large used barrels for a year and a half. After blending, the wine was bottled directly at the cellar, without filtering and with minimal added sulphur (18 mg/l).

This is what a Mittelburgenland Blaufränkisch is like: deep from the clay, delicious from the limestone. Sour cherries, cherry seeds, subtle sourness, black olives and dark berries. Both the colour and the structure are more transparent, hazier and more elevated than the previous vintages. It’s a wine of joy with great details, varietal character and the feel of the place of growth, plus spiciness.
