Ever since its first release in 2016, we have been looking forward to Franz Weninger’s wild rosé, with which he commemorates his hard-working grandmother, Rózsa, every year. Olivér Csepella drew a lasting label for it with lots of details from the eventful childhood of Rózsa, who was born in 1921, from the two sides of the Burgenland border, with Rózsa playing the accordion in the centre. From the Austrian side, such light varieties as Pinot Noir and Szentlőrinc were put into it, while from the Hungarian side it has the somewhat heavier, spicier Syrah from the Steiner vineyard. The brief maceration was followed by spontaneous fermentation in concrete vats and used barrels. Bottling took place without filtering or fining. The new vintage is a lot more ‘rosé-like’ than last year’s – the colour is paler, while the palate is light, refreshing and juicy. It shows its best side at cellar temperature and after a brief chance to breathe, just like the Weninger wines usually do.
