Situated halfway between the Alps and the Mediterranean, in Styria (Steiermark), is one of the region's most well-known and historically significant estates. Today, the calm and meticulous Katharina Tinnacher is at the helm of Lackner-Tinnacher, refining the family style over the past decade. They cultivate vines on breathtakingly steep and vividly green hillsides.
All the vineyards here are organically cultivated, and all wines are made from grapes harvested from the 18 hectares surrounding the cellar. Their Sauvignon Blanc comes from a unique clone, with Katharina explaining, "My grandfather loved the small clusters; they ripened the best in his time." Like all in the range, the Gamlitz village wine undergoes slow pressing, followed by spontaneous, prolonged fermentation in large oval barrels, then ageing in the same vessels. It’s a blend of six parcels from young vines of the Welles and Steinbach vineyards. It reveals rosemary, green herbs, tingling acidity, restrained green aromas and a round, subtly yeasty palate.
