The ‘mountain wine’. The wine that represents the style of the winery, made from organic raw material, from 100% Grüner Veltliner. No frills, but instead it’s complex and crispy. Following the harvest, half of the fruit was put into a basket press, the other half into a pneumatic press, then the wine was fermented spontaneously in tanks and rested on lees until February. For four generations, on roughly 60 hectares east of the Kremstal, Kamptal and Wachau triangle, everything’s been about Grüner Veltliner. Harvested from loess and pebbly soils, the Am Berg is very long and salty. The palate is dense, but not slow, and it is enlivened by citrusy acidity.
Bernhard Ott was 21 when he took over and made the more than 100-year-old family estate a success. The single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners, based on the local character, are cultivated biodynamically, in the Ott family’s old winemaking style, to which Bernhard Ott returned after a lengthy period of experimenting.
