Petrus has been rated as one of the most valuable Right Bank territories at the highest point of the Pomerol plateau since the 1750s. It has an entirely uniquely structured blue clay, planted after phylloxera with Merlot vines over almost the complete 11-hectare plot. The estate became known worldwide only from the 1960s, and its rise can be attributed to the Moueix family, which is still the majority owner of the estate. Petrus has appeared among the biggest names since the 1980s owing to Robert Parker’s scores, and parallel to it, it also pushed up the prices of its Pomerol neighbours.

Unlike many big Bordeaux names, Petrus is a one-wine cellar, with no second wine. The 11 hectares of the estate are harvested in many batches over several weeks, when the grapes are perfectly ripe. The bunches arriving at the cellar are always destemmed, then sorted with an optical system. Fermentation starts in traditional chilled concrete vats, ageing happens in barrique barrels, 50% of which are first-fill in all cases. After two years of ageing, the wines are bottled unfiltered. The wine has a unique style, high concentration and broad structure, and also such harmony that can only be found in a few wines. Beside the spices, coffee, cigars, violets, truffles and forest floor, it has indescribable balance, great depth and an endless finish.

2005 brought more mature flavours with rich aromas, including vanilla, cedar, black cherry and graphite. Recommended consumption between 2020 and 2050.
