Often, the topographical border between the two villages is overruled by the wines themselves, when a ‘borderline’ parcel shows strong echoes of the neighbouring village’s style. This is the case with Romaric Chavy’s parcel in Pommard, which, despite the village’s iron-rich, rustic, angular character, produces a soft, subtle, slender Pinot Noir. This is no coincidence, since this nearly 40-year-old, densely-planted parcel lies right on the border of Volnay, the place of growth of the most delicate red wines of the Côte de Beaune. A steep, rocky site of 0.3 hectares with 3,300 vines, aged for one year, 20% in new oak.
