One of Burgundy's oldest appellations perfectly exemplifies the structure of the region: 86 owners share just 50 hectares, with many estates only receiving a few rows of vines or enough grapes for a single barrel of wine from this mythical place. Among the owners of Vougeot, Domaine de la Vougeraie stands out. Even its name hints at the estate's focus, with its most significant vineyards lying within the stone walls of Clos de Vougeot.
Founded in 1999 and now practicing biodynamic viticulture, the domaine cultivates 40 hectares across 30 appellations and six grand cru vineyards. Despite this breadth, their most famous wine is an exceptional white – a rarity from an appellation almost 100% dedicated to red wine, and even more so from a monopole vineyard. This rarity is the ‘Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot’, a small triangle of white wine vineyards nestled among Pinot Noir plots, yielding Chardonnay with a history spanning nearly 900 years.
Biodynamic growing, meticulous hand-sorting, fermentation and 16 months of ageing in barrels, 30% of which are new. An astonishingly compact wine: serene and slowly-flowing, yet vibrant, refreshing and complete.
