In Burgundy, there are two villages renowned for highlighting the lightness and delicate character of Pinot Noir through their unique vineyards and winemakers: one is Chambolle-Musigny, and the other is Volnay. The latter has the great advantage of combining finesse with power in its wines. In the Les Champans vineyard, the de Montille family cultivates 0.96 hectares, and is a name that over the years has become inseparable from Volnay itself. Their rows of vines begin at the top of the slope on limestone soil and extend down towards the valley, where the soil becomes increasingly clay-rich, allowing these diverse characteristics to come together harmoniously in the wine.
This parcel has been cultivated organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2005. Fermentation includes 30% whole bunches and 30% of new oak is used during ageing.
The 2022 vintage is vibrant and crisp, oozing freshness. The tannins are already silky and seamlessly integrated into the wine’s structure. It has great ageing potential but is already showing beautifully now.

This is the family estate next to village of Pommard with its Grand Cru and 1er Cru plots growing biodynamically cultivated grapes. It comprises 16 hectares planted mostly with Pinot Noir in 20 small parcels that are located far away from each other. The biggest is hardly one and a half hectares and the smallest is so small that Etienne points at it on the map hanging on the wall with his little finger. The place of our tasting is modest and simple. Next to the little tables, a retired American couple spends a small fortune on the wines of the house. From the six different wines, we managed to bring a case of each to Hungary: from the locally much-appreciated 2008 and the more widely appealing 2009 vintages.
