Pierre Girardin is only in his early 20s, yet he makes wines in Burgundy with remarkable experience and confidence. His portfolio includes vineyards that are out of reach for most, such as Bâtard-Montrachet and Échezeaux, and he carries with him the winemaking heritage of 13 generations of Burgundian ancestors. His first vintage was 2017, and since then he has been refining his own style, which is defined by precise structure, crystal-clear purity, lightness and intricate detail. Featured for the first time in the Bortársaság selection.
Bâtard-Montrachet is one of the world’s most highly regarded white wine vineyards. It lies at the meeting point of two legendary villages, Puligny and Chassagne-Montrachet, where the soil is bright white and limestone-rich, and the only grape variety grown is Chardonnay.
The near-fanatical admiration surrounding this vineyard is perhaps best illustrated by its ownership structure. Within the 11-hectare Bâtard-Montrachet vineyard, a total of 40 growers share the land. The largest holding covers just 1.8 hectares, while some owners cultivate as little as 0.04 hectares – around 400 vines, which yields barely a single barrel of wine.
Pierre Girardin refines the classic character of the vineyard – the power and densely woven texture – with subtle winemaking nuances. In his hands, Bâtard-Montrachet stands on slightly lighter feet, with brighter acidity and a more refreshing overall impression. What sets this Grand Cru apart from the rest of the region’s wines are the countless tiny details that are gradually revealed during slow, attentive tasting.
