The best autumn alternative to lively green Sauvignon Blanc is Picpoul. It’s a rare bird, a real ancient variety that has mostly found its place on the French Riviera, in the identically named white wine appellation. It still bears the drying salty and breezy air well on the windy limestone plateau, in the coastal vineyards. There’s a lot in this wine. It reminds its drinker of the real classics: it’s greenish, and it explodes in the mouth, almost like a Sauvignon Blanc, yet the overall effect is rounder. Its colour ranges from pearl white to yellow, the aromas are citrusy like with the best Rieslings, and at the end of the palate, it tastes as salty as a Chablis. It’s an original wine made from a rare variety, from the largest family estate in the region.
