George’s story began in 2019, with the original idea of making an organic estate wine blended entirely from grapes of Szent György Hill, reflecting both the character of the hill and Robert’s Canadian roots. Leaving behind the previous branding and wine style but carrying forward the original concept, George now appears as a new wine. The harvest comes from the Váradi vineyard at the foot of the hill, with varieties typical of the hill, with almost equal parts Furmint, Riesling and Olaszrizling. After spontaneous fermentation, the wine is aged for 8 months in stainless steel tanks and the winery’s used Hungarian barrels.
Well-conceived, detailed and extremely enjoyable. Notes of orange oil, pollen, yellow apple and lemon tart. The structure is juicy and effortlessly flowing, with a subtly lingering salinity in the background, which is a signature touch present in all of Robert’s wines.
Robert Gilvesy’s grandfather, named György, emigrated to Canada in 1929, settling in the Great Lakes region. He helped build the Hungarian church in the local tobacco-growing area, which was ultimately dedicated to Saint George, featuring a fresco depicting him. It was here that Robert first encountered the legend of the martyr, a story that also permeates the history of the Balaton buttes, where he now lives and makes wine.
