The story of George began in 2019. The original concept was an organic estate wine, a blend made entirely from grapes grown on Szent György-hegy, reflecting both the hill and Robert’s Canadian roots.
Leaving behind its previous branding and wine style, while carrying forward the core idea, George is now re-emerging as a new wine.
Harvested from the Váradi vineyard located at the foot of the hill, using varieties characteristic of the area – almost equal parts Furmint, Riesling and Olaszrizling. After spontaneous fermentation, it was aged for eight months in tanks and in the winery’s used Hungarian oak barrels. A well-conceived, detailed and exceptionally enjoyable wine.
Orange oil, pollen, yellow apple and lemon tart. The structure is juicy and smoothly flowing, with a subtle saline note in the background – a signature that appears in all of Robert’s wines.
Robert Gilvesy’s grandfather, who was named György, emigrated to Canada in 1929, to the Great Lakes region. In the tobacco-growing area, he took part in building the Hungarian church, which was eventually dedicated to Saint George, featuring a fresco depicting him. This is where Robert first encountered the legend of the martyr – a story that also permeates the history of the Balaton monadnock, where he now lives and makes wine.
