Balázs Sike is a true native of Badacsonytördemic. After several shorter and longer detours, including a glance towards the southern shore, he returned to his home village, where he and his wife Réka have run the estate since 2014. Since then, they have been developing at remarkable speed: their tasting room is housed in a 200-year-old building, their restaurant sits at the end of Nefelejcs Street, and the cellar is right next door. All of this lies in the shadow of Badacsony’s basalt columns.
Two summers ago, we spoke with them about where the wine world is heading, what kind of red wines we will be drinking in 10 years’ time, and what more and more people are looking for. It quickly became clear that, based on Syrah with the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Kékfrankos, Balázs could blend an endlessly light-textured wine built on primary fruit, under the already familiar Skizo Vörös name. A few weeks passed, harvest was over, and it was an astonishing experience when this wine first landed in our glass. It was not only endlessly charming and light, but one could also feel Balázs and Réka’s overwhelming desire to create something new.
Served well chilled, at white-wine temperature, it shows notes of strawberry, raspberry and rosehip — best from a large glass. A so-called “chilled red”.
