An even greater experience this year is Páva, the ‘grand wine’ of the Konyári estate. The 2020 Páva was everyone’s favourite, and we all gasped at once as it was such an experience, but Dani has managed to raise the bar even higher with the new vintage. Compared to the rest of the range, this is a limited release, and there are few vintages good enough for it to be made at all. For the past 20 years, nearly everything on the Kis-hegy estate has revolved around Bordeaux varieties. Great classics have been born here; it’s easy to stop at Loliense, for example, though there’s an even higher step above it: Páva holds the very flavours that collectors seek in the wines of renowned Rioja bodegas or Bordeaux châteaux. The 2022 vintage of Páva is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with the balance leaning towards Sauvignon. After hand harvesting and destemming, the grapes underwent gravity-based processing and a four-week maceration. The young wine was racked into Hungarian barrique barrels without using pumps, followed by 15 months of ageing. Soft tannins, notes of paprika and oriental spices, perfectly balanced structure, and a long, silky smooth finish. One of the standout wines in our selection within this category.
