"The finest corners of our finest vineyards." – Mihály Figula
Köves comes from the rockiest and leanest sections of the Gella vineyard. Slow ripening, tiny bunches, extremely low yields and concentrated fruit define its foundation.
The backbone of the blend is Olaszrizling, vinified with a red wine approach—skin contact and cool fermentation preserve every nuance of texture and depth. Furmint comes from the poorest soils of the upper rocky ridge and undergoes spontaneous fermentation, adding tension and structure. Fermentation takes place in 500-liter third-
fill barriques and traditional 500-liter Hungarian oak casks, followed by extended bottle aging.
The 2023 Köves takes a slightly different direction. Less overt power, slightly more finesse. The riper characteristics have stepped back, allowing depth, balance and structural precision to come forward. Citrus, ripe peach, pineapple, green herbs and medicinal herbs layer seamlessly, underscored by a subtle saline and stony minerality throughout. The palate is creamy and concentrated yet remains vibrant. Honey, spice, lively acidity and almost chewable minerality hold everything together, leading into a long, slowly unfolding and austerely elegant finish.
The identity of Köves remains firmly rooted in terroir; in 2023, however, structure, proportion and detail take center stage. A grand-format white wine from Lake Balaton. Elegant, precise and concentrated, with serious aging potential.
