“From the best corners of the best vineyards.” Mihály Figula
The latest Köves, the third vintage of the wine that was awarded 97 points at DWWA (Decanter World Wine Awards) wine competition has arrived. The concept of the parcel-level, place of growth wine is the same as previously, however, in 2020 it’s not Pinot Gris(Szürkebarát in Hungarian) but Furmint that completes the 70% Olaszrizling-based Köves. The raw material is provided by the bunches with tiny berries grown on the best parcels of the Gella vineyard, where there’s no need for synthetic chemicals to be used. Planted on the upper, stony cone of the plot, the extremely low-yield Furmint was fermented traditionally – spontaneously – to avoid phenolic notes. The Olaszrizling was made in an unusual way, via red wine technology, being kept on the skins throughout, fermented in cooled tanks by maximizing the goodness found in the skins. It was fermented in a natural way down to 1.8 g/l of residual sugar, then it was aged for 10 months in 500-litre, third-fill barrique and 5-hectolitre, traditional ászok barrels. Following the further 11 months of bottle ageing, the limited quantity of 1,306 bottles of wine, with its long ageing potential, has now been released. Bold aromas of green herbs, medicinal herbs, citrus and tangible minerality. An elegant and balanced wine built to last for decades.
