One of the most important wines from the Egerszalók winery, this blend represents the entire estate – its various terroirs, vineyards, soils, grape varieties and barrels. The first vintage was produced in 2000, originally made entirely from Cabernet Franc. Today, it serves as the midpoint of the winery’s Bikavér concept. Accordingly, the foundation of the wine is Kékfrankos, which best highlights the characteristics of the terroir, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Before blending, each component is aged for 15 months in 500-litre barrels. The final composition is influenced by the combination of Nagy-Eged and Agapé, sometimes incorporating grapes from the limestone-rich soils they come from for added complexity. Intense and vibrant aromas, bursting with fruit and spice – sour cherry, plum, black cherry, clove and cinnamon. On the palate, it is taut yet smooth, with soft tannins and flavours of black berry fruit, especially blackberry and blackcurrant. While Hangács always reflects the specific vintage and terroir, Merengő is more about the winery’s signature style, the freedom of blending and the pursuit of bold flavours.
The story of György Lőrincz and his family is a two-decade-long success story, during which they went from being a small winery to becoming an icon of the wine region, with international awards, a restaurant, a wine bar and emblematic wines. The Egerszalók winery focuses on local varieties and the terroir.
