Géza Balla’s estates are located 20 kilometres east of Arad, on Ménes Hill, at the edge of the Great Plain. The soil here consists of hard granite, diorite and schist, with a thin, sometimes almost non-existent layer of topsoil. The viticulture is traditional, and the grape variety is the Feketeleányka (Feteasca Neagră in Romanian), which is rightly popular in Transylvania. This wine made from it is plum- and blackberry-flavoured, intense, with a subtle spiciness. Although a dry wine, the finish is sweetish, almost silky, not intrusive, but rather long-lasting, leaving a soft aftertaste. Its character and depth evoke the experience of New World Malbecs: lush, warm-toned, yet sufficiently elegant. The grapes were destemmed and inoculated for fermentation, then aged for 14 months in large oak casks.
