One of the most well-known, most liked and of course most anticipated red wines of the artisanal Muzsla winery is the Kadarka. It is characteristically zesty with good acidity, rich in fruity aromas and substance in every vintage. The harvest happens in several batches, then after selection, it is fermented partly destemmed and partly in whole bunches spontaneously for 3-4 weeks in open vats. Fermentation is followed by half a year of ageing in used Hungarian barrels of 5 hl. Finally, it is bottled unfiltered and unfined with a minimal amount of sulphur but a significant amount of lees. It’s a real ‘Swiss army knife’ wine – dynamic and broad at the same time – complex, yet light with the aromas of early summer, red berry fruit, cherry and sour cherry on the nose and the palate.
It was love at first sight when I first laid my eyes upon the nine hectares which lie on Öreg-hegy (Old Hill) at the confluence of the Danube and the Garam rivers, the latter which after running down the Slovakian hills quietens down on the plain.
