We know true fans of Somló, but it's rare to meet someone as passionate as Sándor Baráth. With a background in chemistry and ties to Szombathely, he began working with wine in his late-30s. Delving deeply into the field as a wine merchant, he later took charge of building the Kreinbacher estate in 2002. After being elected president of the local winegrowers' association, there was only one thing left to do: make his own wine.
Following the popular 2021 Juhfark, which combined both natural and traditional characteristics, we’re now presenting a new wine: the 2022 Birtokbor, a blend of three local varieties – Olaszrizling, Furmint and Juhfark – from an organically cultivated, south-facing parcel in Somló. After spontaneous fermentation, the wine underwent two years of ageing in a first-fill, 15-hectolitre Hungarian oak barrel, crafted with Austrian-inspired thick staves.
This wine truly warmed us as we tasted it. It showcases Somló's distinctive fiery character, minerality and intensity in well-balanced harmony, complemented by honey, black tea and kombucha-like notes that verge on sweetness. Despite the ageing in new oak, the wine remains light, well-balanced and authentically unique.
