The grape was created almost a hundred years ago by Dr Fritz Zweigelt by the crossing of the Kékfrankos and Szent Lőrinc varieties. Since then it has become one of Austria’s most significant black grape varieties and we can find outstanding plantations of it around Lake Fertő, on sites close to Sopron, in Hungary. Etyeki Kúria’s Block 2 is one such spot, from where they harvested this Zweigelt from 15-20-year-old vines, from Pannonian alluvial, clay and brown forest soil plots. It was fermented on the skins, in tanks for 18 days, then 20% of it was aged in first-fill, the rest in third- and fourth-fill, 300-litre Hungarian oak barrels for a year.

Deep, purplish colour. Lots of fruits on the nose, mainly black berry fruits and plum, liquorice, complemented by the lively spiciness of black pepper and clove. Blackberry, ripe cherry and sour cherry returns on the palate, accompanied by the pronounced acidity that comes from the limestone soil, with dusty tannins and slight barrel bitterness on the long finish.
