Some things are constant – like Barbár, for example. The 2017 vintage is the ninth and this is one of the best, if not the best Barbár, according to the Heimanns. It comprises all the experience of the last 14 years that they’ve gathered in grape growing and winemaking, as well as in the ageing and the blending of the wines.
42% Cabernet Franc, 24% Merlot, 19% Tannat and 15% Kékfrankos. Zoli and Ági blended the cellar’s top wine from the best barrels. With the Bordeaux varieties, they used smaller, 300-litre barrels that pronouncedly overwrite the wine, and dress it up with mature aromas. The Cabernet Franc and the touch of Kékfrankos was put into smaller, new 500-litre barrels, which due to their thicker staves bring less barrel-agedness but more tannins and with it significantly increase the ageability of the blend. The larger part of the Kékfrankos and the whole of the Tannat ages in larger 10-hectolitre ászok barrels, which authentically keep the grape varieties’ character. The 2017 Barbár is a complex, velvety, full yet lively wine.
