The range of wines from János Márkvárt Jr begins here and ends with the Sauli Kadarka. Every bottle in the four-wine selection from his four-hectare estate holds equal importance. The ‘Jani’ expresses raw vitality — the hard work spent among the vines and the unpolished, pure flavours of Szekszárd. It brings together the estate’s most important sites and grape varieties. From the Baranya-völgy and Faluhely vineyards, where the youngest vines are 22 years old and the oldest 43 years old, cultivated organically since 2020. After a cicada-chorus of a summer, the grapes were hand-harvested in September, then destemmed and fermented in tanks at the winery.
After pressing, the wine was aged until the next harvest in tanks and in the winery’s old oak ‘ászok’ barrels. Nearly half of it is Kékfrankos, which is complemented by Syrah, Zweigelt and a touch of Cabernet to complete the picture. Rosehip flavours, depth and subtle tartness. Straightforward does not mean light. “My grandparents believed that the more varieties of grapes you grow, and the more diverse the places they come from, the better you make wine.” — János Márkvárt Jr.
