We’ve not seen anything similar to János Márkvárt’s Kadarka, made from old vine grapes. From an altogether one-hectare plot, with almost 100-year-old bush vines, in two parcels with fairy-tale names: Jobbremete and Sauli Valley. Incredible value that can only be maintained with a lot of passion and tons of hours spent in the vineyard. Winemaking after this is really just a routine action – fermentation on the skins is followed by brief tank-ageing, then it was bottled unfiltered, so that the harvest flavours can be found in the bottle as well.
If they make the Kadaraka, it also means that the year was good. And 2021 can offer even more than that: “I’ve possibly never had such a good Kadarka,” says Jani. That was when we decided to order two Hungarian barrels, for part of the wine to be aged in for at least a year. To be continued.
