The red clay Görögszó* in Szekszárd is one of the region’s most historically significant and best endowed vineyards. From 24-year-old vines on an east-facing terrace at 200 metres above sea level, only 4,600 bottles were made, which were aged for 18 months in barrels. Full of red fruit, subtle spiciness from soil and oak ageing. A full-bodied wine that’s ‘Takler’ in structure (ripe, good use of oak), with classic flavours and a joyful, mischievous character.
*The Görögszó is one of the most historically prestigious and most iconic vineyards in the Szekszárd wine region. It received its current name after the Serbian Orthodox Monastery and Diocese of St. Michael the Archangel in Grábóc (formerly known as Grábolcz), which held the land for around three and a half centuries.
In addition to Old Church Slavic, the monks conducted their sacred liturgies in Greek, referred to as Görögszó (Greek word) in Hungarian. This led the local Hungarian population to start calling the vineyard Görögszó in 1586, in reference to the monks who celebrated Mass in Greek.
