Zoltán Demeter purchased the Kakas vineyard in Bodrogkeresztúr in 2004, coinciding with his second vintage of dry wine. Since then, a roofed building has stood in the middle of the terraced vineyard, where tasting great Tokaj wines beside the large table is a true experience. The manually-harvested grapes from 45-year-old vines with deep roots on the volcanic, rhyolite site did not make it into barrels. Despite the 5.8 grams of residual sugar in this difficult vintage, his only single-vineyard wine has a dry feel and a strongly mineral character. Slowly opening wildflower and herbal scents, then white-fleshed fruits, citrus, salt and tingling acidity on the palate. Excellent balance.
„Maybe this special vintage was necessary so that after 13 years myself and Bortársaság could get to know each other again. The vintage made it obvious that something is happening in the world that both nature and winemaker should adapt to. The starlings knew what their task was: they arrived a month early, and we started the harvest at the beginning of September, instead of the usual end of October. One can only make good wine in big freedom, and a credible estate wine is only made if people stand behind it and the place of growth verifies them. This is more and more important in my thinking.”
