Tokaj is a special place, pulsating with energy. As a winemaker, it is easy to be tempted to build on this primal force – crafting lean and mineral or intensely sweet wines, in an effort to show everything at once. For this very reason, truly great yet straightforward wines are rare in the region. Attila’s cornerstone blend is exactly that: it contains Furmint, Hárslevelű, the two iconic Homonna vineyards – Rány and Határi – and, ultimately, Tokaj itself. Notes of beeswax, pollen, yellow apple and citrus.
Even late-harvest raisined notes appear. This wine could have been more opulent, heavier and broader – but it isn’t. And that’s precisely what makes it so good.
“The little brother of the estate selection. Fruit from the Csáky, Rány and Határi vineyards, a 50% Furmint and 50% Hárslevelű blend. Spontaneously fermented and aged on fine lees in 5-hectolitre Stockinger barrels. I love aged dry Tokaj wines. Bottle ageing suits it very well,” recounts Attila Homonna, who has been making all of his dry wines the same way since 2004.
