In Tokaj’s southern reaches, near Tarcal, the 2019 vintage yielded pure structured aszú wines with beautiful acidity. Kikelet Pince’s 6-puttonyos aszú epitomises this precision and natural elegance – the meeting of Furmint and Hárslevelű, made from hand-selected botrytised berries and extended ageing. The harvest began in the second half of October, with multiple sweeps through the vineyards, with only the shrivelled, botrytised berries getting selected for the aszú fermentation vats. The must was fermented slowly and naturally, after which the wine was matured in barrels for several years. On the nose, it exudes apricot, orange zest, acacia honey and a touch of spice. On the palate, it’s full yet not heavy – 6-puttonyos richness balanced by pure, vibrant acidity. The finish is long, with salinity and subtle citrus.
