The character of Szepsy wines truly deepens over time – and now, a few exceptional wines are finally being bottled in a format that most clearly reflects this philosophy. The 1.5-litre, or magnum bottle, is not just different in size: this scale speaks of seriousness, respect for time and place. It is also a technological milestone – for a long time, there were no regulations or forms for it in Tokaj – but it is even more so a stylistic statement: the focus is on the terroir and the Furmint grape variety, which can convey this most clearly. From one of Tokaj’s most famous vineyards, narrowed down to a single parcel. Parcel 46 is a slice of the Szent Tamás vineyard hill, from which a linear, pure and concentrated wine has been created. The 2022 harvest took place at the end of August, then the wine was made in new and used barrels, with seven months of ageing. It has minimal residual sugar (3 g/l), a subtly creamy texture and a taut but not severe structure. The depth of the wine is what makes it memorable. It is a generous and uplifting Furmint, which is being released in this format for the first time, in a limited quantity and large format.

Szepsy István

„I’ve been saying for 20 years that we’d stop adding new areas. However, we just can’t stop ourselves! Now it’s the andesite soil of Tállya and its five first-class vineyards that excite me. Once it accounted for most of the grapes in the wine region. My wife’s hairdresser has even asked me why I go there so often. We discover 800-year-old vineyard names and each parcel hides a surprise. The 2011 wines seem suspiciously good: that’s when it’s the most nerve wrecking for the winemaker. Again it showed that there is no recipe in winemaking; the practice of walking the vineyards and experimenting cannot be replaced by anything. Every day we try to make our wines believing that the wine region will once again be at the place where it should be.”
