The Kopár-dűlő is one of Villány’s and Hungary’s best-known vineyard sites and the country’s southernmost, and sits at 120-130 metres above sea level. This renowned area provides the finest base material for Gere's top wines. It’s named after the uppermost areas of the hill, where the soil is so thin that the limestone bedrock is visible. The vines produce smaller but more mineral-rich, concentrated clusters. The grapes harvested here ripen about two weeks earlier each year compared to other areas, achieving perfect ripeness. This is due to the heat absorbed by the rocks during the day being radiated back at night, reducing temperature fluctuations. This area receives the most solar energy in Hungary, and its southern exposure results in the highest number of sunshine hours. The sun's energy surrounds the bunches almost continuously, day and night.
The grapes for Solus Merlot come from 19-25-year-old vines with a yield of 25 hl/ha, harvested from 7,200 vines per hectare. Fermentation occurs in large wooden vats, with malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The wine was aged for 16 months in new, small Hungarian oak barrels.
It boasts a rich colour, with deep purple hues and bordeaux tints. Its exudes captivating power on the nose, with notes of dried plum, roasted cinnamon and vanilla emerging, gradually enriching and deepening the scent profile. The palate is dominated by dynamic elegance, with black berry fruit and coffee-like barrel spices, complemented by fine acids, ripe tannins, and the balanced character of Villány's terroir, painting a complex portrait of the wine. Due to the excellent and vibrant 2021 vintage, it’s very approachable in its current state but is expected to reach its peak between 2031 and 2036.
